When a machine is braked, the motor runs as a generator and feeds energy back into the drive. For regenerative operation over longer periods, or when large moments of inertia have to be stopped, an external brake resistor turns this surplus energy into heat. The resistor is switched in as soon as the DC-bus voltage exceeds the switching threshold, which keeps the drive from tripping on an overvoltage fault and the motor from coasting to a standstill.
ERBU is the most compact member of the Lenze brake resistor family: the metal cartridge resistor is fitted directly on the drive with a cable connection and needs no separate cabinet space. The IP20 version delivers 35 W, the IP65 version 20 W and the IP66 version 15 W of continuous power. Its intrinsically safe design requires no thermal contact.
For higher braking power, Lenze offers the ERBM, ERBP, ERBG and ERBS series, extending the brake resistor range from 15 W up to 34,000 W. Contact Euronorm for selection and sizing for your application.
Features
Mounting on the drive
ERBU is fitted directly on the drive and takes up no additional space in the cabinet.
Intrinsically safe design
The metal cartridge resistor operates safely without a separate thermal contact.
Protection up to IP66
IP20, IP65 and IP66 versions cover a range of ambient conditions.
Controlled braking
The resistor switches in when the DC-bus threshold is exceeded, preventing overvoltage faults.
Wide operating range
The resistor works from –10 °C to +55 °C and suits installation altitudes up to 4000 m.
Applications
- Compact and decentralised drive solutions
- Conveyor and handling systems with frequent stops
- Positioning axes with short braking phases
- Machine areas exposed to dust and water
Power by degree of protection
| Degree of protection | Continuous power |
|---|---|
| IP20 | 35 W |
| IP65 | 20 W |
| IP66 | 15 W |
